"This I Believe"
HI! Here is an essay I wrote in Creative Writing II! :)) I hope you like it!
“This I Believe”
I believe in getting to know other people before you judge them. I believe that you can not know a true person until you know their true character. A person’s character can be described as their personality and how reliable and honest they are to others. There are a great number of people who hide their true selves from society because they fear others will judge them in a negative way. Thinking about what others have gone through and are going through can help you better yourself as a person because it causes you to try to understand them. It helps you become empathetic.
I once met someone who changed my perspective on life. They told me about how there is more to someone than their person in society. They told me about someone I personally know and how they have gone through more than I would have ever imagined. It made me want to know the individual on a more personal level despite the fact I have never grown a strong bond with them. It is interesting to me that people can cover up so much about their story when they present themselves in public.
Furthermore, the person I met turned out to be someone I look up to and have been lucky enough to build a friendly relationship with. They have shared books with me, and we have eye opening conversations together. I find it fascinating that the woman who taught me how to listen to others and demonstrate how I care for them turned out to be someone that I will treasure forever.
I once met someone who helped me work to understand why a specific person was acting the way they were; I learned that their actions were a reaction to what they were going through. I usually think about what others have gone through in comparison to their actions. I feel like it says a lot about their being. Everyone has their own stories that they tell, and they have their own stories that they do not tell. I believe that everyone should have someone they can communicate with and trust.
From my experience, there have been times when I assumed someone was full of rage and lies, yet it turned out that they were full of love and trust. On the other hand, there have been times when I assumed someone was bright and friendly, but they were full of betrayal and dishonesty.
I am someone who sides with the belief that there is more to someone than their appearance in the hallways and streets. If I could sit down and have a conversation with every single individual on this planet, I would because I want to know everyone’s stories. I want to know how everyone behaves once they feel secure in their environment. I want to make everyone feel heard and seen. I want to hear everyone’s perspective on life.
Others should adopt this thinking because it can help build relationships and help others build themselves. A message I would like to send is that this can help make society an overall better place. Getting to know others and hear their stories can help you understand where their actions are coming from.
It is important to not make conclusions about people before you fully get to know them because you can make false assumptions; it is easy to quickly misread an individual when you first meet them. There are people who may need that second first impression or an individual to talk to on a personal level. Getting to know a person before you judge them can be positive on both ends, this I believe.
